UGH! What a nightmare for you. I can so relate to everything you went through, as I had my own mini-version that only lasted three months -- but EIGHT YEARS?? I'm so sorry...

And yet... would either of us be able to really see what's going on without these hideous experiences? I know my giardia-hell -- along with a few other spectacular allopathic medicine fails -- created in me a supreme skepticism. Which may turn out to be life-saving.

Great essay! So readable and funny and human...

Have you tried carnivore diet for IBS? I cured ALL (and I mean ALL) of my chronic illness and autoimmune disorders with it. https://joshketry.substack.com/p/does-carnivore-diet-really-work-for

Yup I eat nuts, mostly raw. Did you know that many nuts in the US are treated, in a process similar to pasteurization? Annoying.. need to get back to farmer’s markets.

An aside.. a friend’s son is seriously allergic to mayo and eggs. Went to Europe and accidentally ate an egg, with no issues. Turned out he is not allergic to eggs, rather the chemicals we “wash” them with in the US. Bc the conditions are grimy and shit ends up on the eggs, so we “clean” them. Ick. Like using chemicals on raw meat.

We all need to get more local, naturally raised food. Too bad I don’t live near the Amish!

IBD and IBS are different animals although the presentation can be similar. IBD - Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's - is a pair of autoimmune diseases with actual inflammation in the digestive tracts. IBS is non-inflammatory, the immune system is not involved, thus is less potentially dangerous. The causes are more obscure but more to do with the nerves and neurotransmitters in the gut.

I have IBD - was dx'd with UC at first but more recently I've been told it's Crohn's. My experience with medications has been opposite. For years I tried all sorts of alternative maladies with zero success. Over twenty years ago I was rx'd a low dose of an immuno-suppressant, one that in much higher doses is used to treat a couple forms of cancer. I've been in solid remission ever since.

Also did you ever try Raw A2 dairy? My wife is allergic to cow dairy and can drink it. I have autoimmune issues and can. And several of my friends with stomach and other autoimmune issues can. A1 or A2 is the protein casein. A1 is bad but oddly the most common one. I get mine from Jersey Cows, from the Amish. Raw A2/A2 delicious whole milk and never seen anyone have an issue. What we eat matters.

I have tried raw dairy, will look into A2. Buttermilk may also be interesting.. These days I have no dairy issues which is amazing given where I started!

Yes food is medicine. Mark Hyman has some great content on this… 5HTP is a natural alternative to SSRIs for example.
